The Sounds Of The Humpback Whales (A-side)
Real-Time Score: A 3-Channel Study
Filmed in a single, continuous shot, this work captures a nocturnal dance scene filtered through six different viewpoints. By blurring the line between those visible within the frame and those haunting the space behind the lens, the film creates a site for both meditative observation and physical immersion. The work invites a meditative, sensory encounter with the event, pulling the viewer into the unfolding choreography.
At the center of the piece is a solitary, magnetic dancer. Her presence is arresting, a gravitational force that captivates and holds the collective gaze of the scene. Rather than offering a clearly defined perspective, each of the three channels serves as a fluid, subjective viewpoint—a shifting gaze that reflects the quiet, nocturnal nature of the scene.
This experience is supported by a real-time score performed by musician Tai Rona, who appears in the background. His presence within the frame as he live-mixes six analog and digital tracks—combining vinyl records, field recordings, and synthesizers—collapses the distance between the sound and the action. These sonic elements intersect and diverge throughout the piece, providing a layered auditory environment that anchors the viewer within the space.
